Menlo Worldwide Logistics, a subsidiary of Con-way Inc., said Thursday it is increasing its use of carriers approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay program.
Since pledging its commitment to SmartWay six months ago, Menlo said it has “significantly stepped up spending with carriers that are also supporting and promoting greater energy efficiency by using practices and equipment recommended through the EPA program.”
“Menlo spends nearly $1 billion on transportation with contract carriers each year,” said Gary Kowalski, Menlo’s chief operating officer. “Now, with more than 80% of that transportation spend going to SmartWay-approved carriers, we are supporting environmental stewardship throughout the transportation industry.”
Con-way said last month it was reducing the speeds of its fleet to 62 miles per hour, in an effort to save fuel and reduce carbon emissions.
Con-way is ranked No. 6 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
