An automatic collision-mitigation system used on heavy-duty trucks for years is available for medium-duty trucks.

The new option from Meritor Wabco OnGuard uses radar to detect objects, warns the driver of a possible rear-end collision and is able to apply brakes.

When the system detects a potentially dangerous driving scenario, it responds by sending warnings, automatically reducing engine torque and applying the foundation brakes, according to Meritor.

"Meritor Wabco is very pleased that medium-duty trucks will now be able to realize the same benefit that fleets with heavy-duty trucks have gained by using OnGuard to reduce frequency of rear-end truck collisions, damage and costs as well as reduce injuries and save lives," Meritor Wabco President Stephen Hampson said in a statement.

OnGuard has been used in heavy-duty trucks since 2007, and more than 200 fleets are using the system, according to Meritor Wabco.

The company said next year it will introduce OnGuardACTIVEfor heavy- and medium-duty trucks. The system delivers a warning and brakes when detecting stationary objects, avoiding or at least mitigating damage from a potential accident.
