Michelin to Buy Tire Centers Inc.

Michelin North America is buying Tire Centers Inc. of Akron, Ohio, one of the nation’s largest independent tire dealers and a recent convert to Michelin’s new retread tire technology.

“Due to the strategic importance of TCI to our retreading initiative, when TCI approached us about selling their business, we decided to acquire it,” said Jim Micali, president of Michelin North America.

Michelin launched its proprietary retreading system in September 1997. Ten of TCI’s 17 retread shops have since converted to the Michelin pre-mold curing process over the past year, and three more are in the process of converting this year. TCI had previously used a Bandag Inc. retread system.

TCI operates 163 tire stores and sells passenger, light truck, commercial truck and earth-mover tires.

The purchase does not change Michelin’s replacement tire distribution strategy, according to Micali.

“Our commitment remains in support of the independent tire dealer network,” he said.

TCI will run as a stand-alone business, Michelin said. Scott Snyder, the current TCI general manager, will become president of the unit. Former owner Jim Berlin will continue as a consultant.
