Midwest Floods May Last Through Weekend

Widespread flooding primarily in the Midwest threatened to worsen Friday, with many rivers rising past their banks for more than a day, the Associated Press reported.

Levee breaches in southeast Missouri left many major roadways impassable. The worst flooding was in smaller rivers across the Midwest, while major rives such as the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio, saw only minor flooding, AP said.

Separately, a snowstorm blew into the Chicago area, prompting authorities to cancel flights, and a blizzard warning remained in effect in northern Maine, where strong winds scattered a foot or more of snow, AP reported.

Thursday brought better weather flooded communities, but rivers were not expected to crest until the weekend in Arkansas, Missouri, southern Illinois, southern Indiana and Kentucky, AP reported.
