Mineta Will Use IG Report As ‘Guideline’

Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta said he would use a recent Department of Transportation inspector general’s report, detailing recommendations for trucking and other modes of transportation, as a “guideline and reference.”

The IG report, which congressional committees requested late last year, made recommendations for DOT action on issues including pipeline safety, computer security, transportation security, aviation safety, aviation system capacity and air traffic control modernization, and surface and airport infrastructure.

Mineta made his comment Jan. 24 at the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee hearing on his nomination as DOT secretary. He won swift and unanimous confirmation from the full Senate while he was still testifying at the hearing.

Committee chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) praised the report from Inspector General Kenneth Mead, saying the findings and recommendations present an unbiased and objective look at what needs to be done.
