Mississippi Bridge Span Reopened

The $338 million Biloxi-Ocean Springs bridge in Mississippi reopened to traffic earlier this month, the Associated Press reported.

There was not any fanfare for the April 7 opening of the span on U.S. Highway 90, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, AP said.

Because the rebuilding project was done, the Mississippi Department of Transportation asked contractors to clear the way so drivers could take over the six-lane bridge, AP reported.

The federal government paid for the replacement roadwork, just as it paid for the $283 million for the new bridge that reconnected Pass Christian and Bay St. Louis, AP said.

Demolition of the old, four-lane bridge started in July 2006, although the new bridge is wider and taller, AP reported.
