MTL to Combine Chemical Fleets

Two of the best-known names in the chemical hauling business are about to disappear.

MTL Inc. said it will combine its two principal chemical hauling operations — Montgomery Tank Lines and Chemical Leaman Tank Lines — to form Quality Carriers, beginning March 1.

The parent company will also change its name from MTL to Quality Distribution Inc.

“Combining our chemical-hauling stainless steel operations and changing our name are two major events for our company,” said Charles J. O’Brien Jr., chairman of the parent company.

“It gives our customers one source for all their bulk transportation requirements,” he said. “Quality Carriers will be uniquely positioned as the service leader within our industry.”

Chemical Leaman Tank Lines was established in 1913 and is the nation’s largest bulk hauler. Montgomery Tank Lines has grown rapidly in recent years and is among the most profitable companies in the industry.

Quality Distribution will operate a fleet of about 3,850 tractors as well as more than 7,900 trailers and bulk containers. MTL’s combined revenue, on a pro forma basis, was $659.3 million in the 12 months that ended Sept. 30.

Jack Elrod, former president of Chemical Leaman Tank Lines, was named president of Quality Carriers. He will report to Buddy Sexton, who remains chief executive officer of the chemical-hauling subsidiary.
