Surface trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico rose 1.5% in March from a year earlier, though imports by truck fell, the Department of Transportation said Thursday.
Surface trade among the North American Free Trade Agreement partners rose to $70.8 billion, DOT’s Bureau of Trade Statistics said in its monthly report.
Truck imports to the United States fell 8% year-over-year to $23.8 billion, while exports rose 0.7% to $23.4 billion.
Rail imports fell 4.7% to $8.1 billion, while exports rose 6.5% to $4.3 billion. Pipeline imports jumped 54.4% to $6.7 billion, while export figures were not available, DOT said.
Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. About 90% of U.S. trade among NAFTA partners moves by land.
