Surface transportation trade among the United States, Canada and Mexico rose 4.1% to $830 billion in 2008 from 2007, the Department of Transportation said Wednesday.
The 4.1% growth rate was the smallest year-over-year since 2003, DOT said in a statement.
U.S.-Canada trade totaled rose 5.1% to $537 billion. Truck imports fell 6%, but the value of exports carried by truck rose 2.4%.
U.S.-Mexico trade rose 2.3% to $293 billion. The value of imports carried by truck fell 2.1%, while the value of exports gained 7.8%.
Total North American surface transportation imports rose 2.7% in 2008 from a year earlier, while exports rose 5.9%.
About 86% of U.S. merchandise trade by value with Canada and Mexico moved on land last year, DOT said.
Total North American surface transportation trade value in 2008 rose 47.5% compared with 2003, and up 83.7% compared with 1998, a period of 10 years.
