Nafta Trade Value Declines 8.4% in November

The value of U.S. trade with Canada and Mexico in November decreased by 8.4% year-over-year to $88.2 billion, and truck freight value slipped by 0.4%, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Vessel freight values decreased 42.6%, and pipeline freight decreased 43.2% mainly due to the lower unit price of mineral fuel. Air decreased by 7.3% and rail by 9.8%.

Trucks carried 66.2% of U.S.-Nafta freight and are the most heavily utilized mode for moving goods to and from both U.S.-Nafta partners. Trucks accounted for $30 billion of the $46.8 billion of imports (64.1%) and $28.3 billion of the $41.1 billion of exports (68.5%).

The value of U.S.-Canada freight totaled $45.1 billion in November 2015, down 13.8% from November 2014. Trucks carried 60.4% of the freight to and from Canada.



The value of U.S.-Mexico freight totaled $43 billion in November 2015, down 1.9% from the same month the prior year, as air and truck carried more U.S.-Mexico freight than in November 2014. The value of U.S.-Mexico truck freight rose 4.9%, led by shipments of electrical machinery, which were up 10.5%.

Trucks carried 72.3% of the freight to and from Mexico.
