Navistar, UAW Reach Tentative Agreement

Navistar International Corp. and the United Auto Workers union have reached a tentative agreement on new four-year labor contracts, the company said.

The tentative pact is subject to ratification through a majority vote by UAW members at affected locations, Navistar said Saturday.

Voting by union locals is likely to begin this week, Navistar said in a statement on its website, but said it would not release details of the agreement prior to completion of the vote.

The UAW represents about 2,000 employees at Navistar plants and offices in Melrose Park, Ill., Springfield, Ohio, Atlanta, Dallas, York, Penn., and Fort Wayne, Ind., the Wall Street Journal reported on its website Monday.

Navistar recently laid off about 250 workers at the Springfield plant due to slower business, an Ohio newspaper reported earlier this month. (Click here for previous coverage.)

Workers have remained on the job since the labor contract expired Oct. 1. The UAW said previously that substantial issues still on the table include health care, pensions, safety and job security. (Click here for previous coverage.)
