New Ambassador Bridge Span Rejected

The U.S. Coast Guard has rejected plans for a second Ambassador Bridge span connecting Detroit to Windsor, Ontario, the Detroit News reported.

It was the second setback in a month for Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel “Matty” Moroun, who was notified Coast Guard Tuesday of the denial, the News said.

It denied the application because Moroun had problems in acquiring the land necessary for a new span, the paper reported.

On the U.S. side of the Detroit River, Moroun recently lost a court suit that involved Michigan and the city in a dispute over the land for traffic ramps and a truck plaza at the bridge entrance.

On the Canadian side, the government has said it does not want a new Ambassador span dumping traffic into a Windsor neighborhood.

Two miles downriver, the Canadian and U.S. governments are planning to build a new, publicly owned bridge, the News reported..
