New Jersey Truckers Stuck In Town-Port Dispute

Truckers caught in the middle of political controversy between the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and a nearby town are facing delays and heavy scrutiny at traffic stops outside the dock gates.

Officials in Elizabeth, N.J., are upset with the agency for making a deal with Continental Airlines that allows the company to avoid paying city taxes on a commercially desirable seaport property.

Mayor J. Christian Bollwage struck back Oct. 11 by closing two of three outbound lanes of a major road leading from the local maritime terminal and having police stop trucks for safety inspections.

The truck crackdown has resulted in more than 200 summonses being issued for weight violations and other safety infractions to some of the 4,000 commercial vehicles that use the road daily. It also has caused backups of up to a mile and delays of several hours at the East Coast’s busiest port.
