Sue Bailey assumed duties Aug. 21 as administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, replacing Ricardo Martinez, who stepped down in October 1999.
Bailey previously served as assistant secretary of defense for health affairs, a post she has held since 1998. She was the first woman to lead the Military health system.
The post has been filled in the interim by Deputy Administrator Rosalyn G. Millman.
Bailey was nominated for the post by President Clinton in July and her nomination is still pending before the Senate.
However, on Aug. 3, the President announced her “recess appointment” as administrator.
