New York Considers Longer Rest For Truckers

New York is considering a plan to abolish the time limits it places on truckers trying to sleep at rest areas and scenic overlooks along state highways.

Currently, drivers who stop at state rest areas longer than three hours after dark risk getting a ticket.

New York is one of 13 states that have held on to time restrictions for truckers despite opposition from industry representatives who say it makes no sense to send fatigued drivers back out onto the roads.

“These facilities exist,” said William G. Joyce Jr., president of the New York State Motor Truck Association. “So instead of waiting for them to embark on a grand plan to build more rest areas, let’s stop enforcing this rule and use the ones we have.”
