New Jersey state transportation officials are considering whether to allow heavy trucks to travel on the entire Garden State Parkway, rather than just the portion allowed now, the Asbury Park (N.J.) Press reported.

Trucks are only currently allowed south of exit 105 on the state’s toll road, the paper reported Sunday. Trucks crossing the Raritan River are now limited to using Routes 35, 9 or the New Jersey Turnpike.

A major roadblock has been removed, with the reconstruction of the Driscoll Bridge and construction of a new third span in 2009, the paper said.

Older parkways like those in New York were designed for automobiles and have bridges with lower clearances that will not accommodate the heights of tractor trailers.

That is the case with some of the original Garden State Parkway stone overpasses with arches in Middlesex and Union counties, the Press said.
