Equipment Designers Struggle to Fulfill Regulatory Mandates

There were many developments and observations about new vehicles. But at a time when virtually all truck, engine and other component suppliers are working feverishly to redesign their products to meet the variety of looming federal and state regulations on emissions, ergonomics and the like, one message repeated during the technical and engineering sessions and industry-issue forums was that there are no shortcuts.

That may have disappointed some attendees, but engineers are a stoic lot and do what needs to be done.

As in the past several years, there has been much focus on how truck and engine suppliers are planning to meet the strict 2002 diesel emission regulations. There was a mixture of confidence and concern among diesel engine suppliers that they will meet the standards.
