Northeast States Prepare for Blizzard

Northeastern states prepared for a blizzard expected to slam into the region Friday, with two big storm systems converging from the Midwest and the Atlantic seaboard, news reports said.

Some areas of New England were forecast to get 2 feet of snow or more, while New York City road crews were preparing for about 6 inches of snow, the Associated Press reported.

The predicted blizzard was expected to be at its strongest from Friday night into Saturday morning, the Boston Globe reported.

Amtrak is canceling train service between New York and Boston beginning Friday afternoon and has suspended other regional service, while bus lines canceled all routes north of New York City, the Globe said.

At least three New York City service stations ran out of gasoline Friday morning in advance of the storm, with long lines reported at others, Reuters reported.

New Jersey officials expected major coastal flooding, high winds and possible blizzard conditions in the northeastern part of the state, Reuters said.

Airlines canceled almost 4,000 Friday flights, including more than 1,500 at New York’s three major airports, Bloomberg News reported.

The blizzard will be formed by a large storm system moving from the Midwest, combined with cold air and an offshore low-pressure system that meteorologists said would bring high winds, feeding the system.
