NPTC Wants Smaller Firms to Join

The National Private Truck Council hopes a massive shake-up can counter a decline in membership.

Members of the organization will gather to vote on restructuring their roster to attract companies that operate light- and medium-duty fleets or outsource fleet operations. Balloting is scheduled at the annual meeting starting May 2 in Long Beach, Calif.

If approved by a two-thirds vote, the council’s fleet and associate membership divisions will be replaced by six branches more representative of the industry. Three categories will be designated for fleets — heavy-duty, medium- and light-duty, and third-party users such those outsourced under a lease or dedicated contract arrangement. The rest will cover suppliers.

“There is now the perception that NPTC is a big-company organization. The structure clearly demonstrates there is room in the tent for light- and medium-duty operators,” said John McQuaid, president of the group. “We will have specific representation from them on the board, where it was indirect in the past.”

The council, based in Alexandria, Va., reports a decline of about 10% in membership since 1997. It currently has 900 fleet members and 250 associate members, he said.
