Truck original equipment manufacturers are scheduled to display units powered by alternative fuels, including compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas, at this week’s Alternative Clean Transportation Expo in Washington.

Volvo Trucks said Monday it will display new trucks powered by CNG and dimtethyl ether. CNG- and DME-powered Volvo VNL models two of Volvo’s offerings in its alt-fuel lineup, the company said.

Volvo said earlier this month that it would commercialize DME-powered vehicles in 2015 as part of its comprehensive “Blue Power” alternative fuels strategy for North America.

In March, Volvo and sister company Mack Trucks set a partnership with Shell Oil Co. to boost LNG use in heavy trucks.

Kenworth Truck Co. said it will showcase four natural-gas trucks at its booth

The company is seeing “growing interest” in natural-gas trucks among fleets and truck operators throughout the United States and Canada, said Alan Fennimore, Kenworth’s vocational marketing manager.

“We expect to see a good flow of truck buyers visit our booth to learn more about the advantages and benefits of Kenworth natural gas trucks for their specific applications.”

ACT’s technology showcase will spotlight efficiencies in new product offerings, and a roundtable discussion among OEMs on Tuesday afternoon will include Volvo, Kenworth, Daimler Trucks North America, Navistar Inc. and Peterbilt Motors Co. representatives, as well as Cummins Westport, which makes engines for natural-gas trucks.
