Ohio Gov. Bob Taft and American Trucking Associations President William J. Canary last week officially enlisted the Buckeye State in ATA’s American Trucking Army, a program that trains drivers to keep an eye out for suspicious activity on highways.

“We’re giving the president 3 million fresh troops to watch out for and to report security situations,” Canary said June 6 in a ceremony at Ohio Highway Patrol headquarters in Columbus. “We’re offering Ohio and the Highway Patrol extra eyes and ears to help patrol your highways and watch for emergencies and safety situations.”

In response to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, ATA last month announced it was expanding its existing Highway Watch program nationwide (5-20, p 1). Ohio is the ninth state to join the program, which teaches truckers to spot road problems or suspicious behavior and report the information to authorities using a special toll-free number.
