Drivers of heavy trucks will pay up to $12 to cross two future bridges and one existing bridge across the Ohio River in the Louisville, Ky., area under a plan approved by a bi-state commission overseeing the project to build the new structures.
Large trucks using toll transponders will pay $10 to cross the bridges, while those whose owners have registered their license plates for paying tolls will be charged $11, the Kentucky-Indiana Tolling Body decided Sept. 11. The $12 rate will be for trucks that have not been registered, meaning the bridges’ all-electronic tolling system must mail bills to the trucks’ owners.
It will cost smaller trucks $5 to $7, depending on the toll payment method, and passenger cars will be charged $1 to $3, depending on the payment method and the commuting frequency of the vehicle’s driver.
Tolls will increase 2.5% or the rate of inflation, whichever is greater, the tolling body said in statement.
Both states are funding a new bridge east of downtown Louisville and one to double the capacity of the Interstate 65 crossing downtown. After the bridges are completed in 2016, the existing I-65 bridge will have its deck rebuilt.
