A proposal to require electronic stability control on all new heavy vehicles has been cleared by the White House Office of Management and Budget, the final hurdle before it is published.
The rule by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration would mandate systems that address rollover and loss-of-control crashes.
In its most recent regulatory agenda, NHTSA estimated that the mandate would save 29 to 66 lives per year.
Costs to implement the requirement would range from $55 million to $107 million, but it would result in net benefits of $128 million to $372 million due to travel delays and property damage, NHTSA said.
OMB approved the proposal on Friday. NHTSA had expected to publish the proposal in April.
