OOIDA: ATA Hurting Effort to Pass Fuel Law
The executive vice president of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association says American Trucking Associations is hurting his group’s efforts to get a national fuel surcharge law by remaining neutral on the plan.
“The ATA’s neutrality is being perceived as opposition,” said OOIDA’s Todd Spencer. He and OOIDA President James Johnston were in Washington, D.C., last week to meet with members of Congress over their plan.
“Our board of directors voted to take no position on this bill and instructed the ATA staff to monitor its progress — and that’s what we’ve done,” he said.

However, James Whittinghill, senior vice president for government affairs at ATA, said the group has taken no action in opposition to the OOIDA measure.
