Oregon Voters Approve ‘Fair Share’ Amendment

Oregon voters amended the state’s constitution to call for cars and trucks to pay their fair share of highway costs.

Voters decided Nov. 2 to require the state to perform a cost allocation study every two years and use it to divvy up the tax burden between cars and trucks.

Backers of the transportation package that includes a repeal of the state’s weight-distance tax hope approval of the amendment, called Measure 76, will pave the way for voters to reject an attempt by AAA’s Idaho/Oregon chapter to keep the tax.

“Passage of Measure 76 is a victory for everyone who wants to see Oregon’s roads and bridges maintained and improved in a way that is fair and equitable to all road users,” said Pat McCormick, spokesman for a coalition that backed the constitutional amendment.
