Outpost will offer more than 1,700 additional tractor-trailer parking spaces at four sites near key U.S. logistics hubs, it said Sept. 19.

The company, which operates a network of truck terminals and fleet yard facilities, is to open facilities near Chicago; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; the Inland Empire, Calif.; and Laredo, Texas, with nearly 60 acres of industrial outdoor storage.

The 30-acre Chicagoland facility in West Dundee, Ill., will offer more than 1,000 spaces for tractor-trailers, which Outpost said would increase total truck parking capacity in the state by nearly 9%, citing Illinois Department of Transportation data from 2020. The site is scheduled to open in October, with space available for advance booking.

Outpost’s 14-acre yard in Coral Springs, Fla., is the company’s first in Florida, adding 370 truck parking spaces.

The Inland Empire yard in Fontana is Outpost’s first in California. It has nearly 100 parking spaces. The 11-acre Laredo site includes 320 parking spaces.

“As our network continues to expand, motor carriers increasingly look to Outpost as a strategic partner for positioning their fleets, improving asset visibility, and optimizing their real estate investments,” said Trent Cameron, Outpost CEO.

“This can only be accomplished through our combination of purpose-built technology and the operational expertise of managing yards at scale. Our four new properties strengthen our ability to help these fleets operate more efficiently in critical freight corridors across the U.S.,” he added.

Previously known as Semi-Stow, Outpost will offer more than 11,000 parking spaces once the launch of the latest facilities is complete.

The company also acquired three facilities in June in the Detroit, Memphis, Tenn., and San Antonio, metropolitan areas that will open in 2025. The three sites will add a further 1,500 parking spaces to Outpost’s operations, it said in June.

New York-based investment firm GreenPoint Partners in 2023 launched a $500 million truck and trailer storage portfolio, which Outpost will manage.

The longtime paucity of tractor-trailer parking is high on the agenda in the corridors of Congress as well as forming an opportunity for private entities.

A House of Representatives transportation funding bill would provide $200 million to expand truck parking as well as bankroll the Department of Transportation in fiscal year 2025.

The inclusion of the parking funding won plaudits from American Trucking Associations, with President Chris Spear noting in June: “The severe shortage of truck parking places an enormous burden on truck drivers, who often don’t know if they will be able to find a safe place to sleep when they finish their shift. This significant investment to expand parking capacity would help alleviate stress on truck drivers, move freight more efficiently, and make the roadways safer for all motorists.”

However, that appropriations bill and others — or short-term measures — must be signed by President Joe Biden before Oct. 1 or a partial shutdown of federal agencies will begin.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg believes adding more parking for trucks is central to the agency’s mission.

DOT awarded $180 million in the 2023-24 fiscal cycle to the Florida Department of Transportation to increase parking along Interstate 4 in central Florida and more than $100 million to projects in Missouri, Wisconsin and on the I-5 corridor, which runs west of the Inland Empire.

Earlier in September, the Truckload Carriers Association emphasized the dire need for truck parking to receive more backing from federal authorities during its sixth annual “Call on Washington.” TCA held 100 meetings with policymakers during the visits.
