Overnite, Teamsters Fence Before Congress
WASHINGTON — James P. Hoffa, eager to free the Teamsters union from federal oversight, took his plea to Capitol Hill and ended up answering questions about violence at Overnite Transportation terminals.
The March 28 hearing before the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations was meant to focus on the need of the Department of Justice to continue oversight of the union. However, Overnite arrived at the hearing with lobbyists, while the Teamsters brought alleged victims of violence.
The congressmen seemed inclined to free the Teamsters from federal supervision, but some were concerned about whether the union had done enough to shed past behaviors after seeing videotapes of violence at Overnite terminals.
