Pact to Improve Safety Is Signed

Transportation interests and labor unions were among the groups that signed an agreement with the Department of Transportation to work on improving safety.

The signing took place March 3 in Washington, D.C., at the conclusion of the two-day National Transportation Safety Conference, organized by DOT.

Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater said the department will develop a plan to complement its comprehensive safety strategy and continue efforts to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities in all modes of transportation.

Organizations, including American Trucking Associations, the Motor Freight Carriers Association, the Association of American Railroads, Advocates for Highway & Auto Safety, CSX Corp. and Union Pacific Railroad, promised to work together in a variety of areas. DOT agreed to assist participants in developing educational programs and materials on transportation safety.
