Paul Mattox, who has served as West Virginia's transportation secretary since 2006, will return to the private sector as the governor-elect, Jim Justice, fills his cabinet with his own appointees, according to the West Virginia Metro News Network.

Mattox served under outgoing Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin after having been named highways commissioner by then-Gov. Joe Manchin in 2005 and becoming transportation secretary a year later.

“I have had the once-in-a-lifetime honor and pleasure of working for the state I grew up in and love,” Mattox told co-workers. “In my 12 years of service, I have held the confidence of Gov. Manchin and Gov. Tomblin and worked that entire time making sure the West Virginia Department of Transportation and its eight agencies have been noble stewards of taxpayers’ money.”

Justice has yet to name a replacement for Mattox. Justice takes office Jan. 16.
