Pennsylvania Turnpike to Add More Rest Spaces for Truckers

Because of a 1998 seven-fatality crash, the Pennsylvania Turnpike will build several new service plazas for motorists and refurbish old plazas to be used exclusively by trucks.

In the June 1998 crash, a bus hit a tractor-trailer parked on the side of the highway and the rig in turn rammed another truck parked in front of it. Seven people were killed and 16 injured.

The two trucks were parked so the drivers could get some needed sleep — they could not find an open space at a truck stop or rest area.
