The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission relaxed the rules that determine which hazardous materials may be trucked through the four mountain tunnels on its toll road.
The move is the result of four years of negotiations between the state and truckers, who expect to keep hundreds of thousands of hazmat haulers each year from having to take the long way around.
The new rules, which were to take effect July 16, allow trucks hauling so-called Table Two materials in non-bulk shipments through the tunnels.
Table Two materials include loads placarded as flammable gas, flammable liquids, flammable solid, spontaneously combustible, oxidizer, organic peroxide, poison and corrosive.
