Peterbilt Motors Co. now offers the Bendix Wingman Fusion advanced driver assistance safety system, which includes lane departure warning, enhanced collision mitigation and in-lane object recognition for its 579 and 567 over-the-road and vocational models, respectively.

The system gathers information from radar, video, several sensors and the braking system to create a highly detailed in-cab picture of the vehicle’s external operating environment, according to the Denton, Texas-based truck maker.

“Fusion sets new benchmarks for accurate decision-making,” Scott Newhouse, Peterbilt’s chief engineer, said in a statement. “The optimized communication between safety systems working together takes driver assistance technology to a new level of performance.”

As an added safety offering, Peterbilt said, it is pairing the Wingman Fusion system with the stand-alone Bendix Blindspotter side object detection system, which provides drivers with visual and audible alerts when vehicles are traveling in the truck’s passenger-side blind spot.

The Bendix Wingman Fusion and Blindspotter systems are available now for order through Peterbilt dealers, the company said.

Peterbilt also was making available the Hendrickson Softek Nxt integrated steer system, which saves more than 100 pounds compared with traditional two-leaf spring and I-beam axle systems, benefiting fuel-conscious applications such as tankers and bulk haulers, according to the company.

The Softer Nxt system combines the Steertek Nxt 12,500-pound-rated axle and the monoleaf spring technology with an advanced integrated knuckle design, Peterbilt said, and the design simplifies the kingpin bushing serviceability, improving uptime.

“This is an exciting addition to our portfolio of lightweight options for the vocational and longhaul segments,” Robert Woodall, Peterbilt assistant general manager of sales and marketing, said in a statement.

The 12,500-pound-rated integrated system is available now for order through dealers, and a 13,200-pound-rated axle will be available for order by the end of the year.
