Police in Two States Test Fatigue Monitor of the Eye

State police in Michigan and Illinois are testing a device that its inventors claim can be used roadside to determine if truckers are too fatigued to be driving.

Eyecheck’s makers claim it can distinguish fatigue from alcohol or drugs by testing pupils.
Eyecheck, made by MCJ Inc., looks like a pair of binoculars. In simple terms, the company claims its product can differentiate among types of driver impairment — drugs, alcohol, lack of sleep — based on a test of pupil-response to light.

The state trials are for testing purposes only, not enforcement. However, police hope Eyecheck will become an important tool for keeping unfit drivers off the roads.
