Port of Los Angeles to Spend $400 Million on Improvement Projects

The Los Angeles Harbor Commission said it will spend almost $400 million on improvement projects at the Port of Los Angeles.

The improvement funds were approved with the port’s $1.1 billion 2013-2014 budget and will pay for container terminal upgrades as well as for increased shore power for docked ships.

The harbor commission said it is the port’s largest annual capital improvement program, with 39% of the budget going toward the upgrades.

Funds also will be used to improve the port’s rail yard, enhance vehicle access and replace pavement, according to the harbor commission.

“Capital improvements and improved efficiency are essential if we’re to maximize cargo flow as well as maintain our position as the nation’s No. 1 container port,” Harbor Commission President Cindy Miscikowski said in a statement.
