Port Union Makes Offer to Break Deadlock

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union said it submitted a proposal allowing West Coast port operators the use of productivity-enhancing technology in exchange for expanded union job coverage, including all new information technology jobs.

The union said it hopes the proposal will break the deadlock in contract talks with the Pacific Maritime Association, representing port terminal operators.

The contract between the ILWU and PMA expired July 1. As of press time, however, the two sides were agreeing on day-to-day extensions as talks continued.
