PTDI Urged to Expand Training Certification

The Professional Truck Drivers Institute is walking slowly down the road to independence.

A 16-member transition committee recommended that the institute improve its oversight of the truck driver training programs that the organization certifies, and expand its certification program beyond those schools preparing students for careers in the truckload segment.

The committee, comprised of truckload, private and less-than-truckload carrier representatives, educators and state trucking association executives, made the recommendations after a June 14 meeting in Dallas in which the discussions on the issue were held.

Details of the transition plan will be hashed out over the summer and presented to PTDI’s board for a vote in September. If approved, PTDI would become a stand-alone organization in mid-2001.
