Federal trucking regulators will hold a conference this spring on new eye-based technology to measure driver alertness.
The conference will be held April 26 and 27 in Washington, D.C., and is sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration’s Office of Motor Carriers and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Vehicle Safety Research.
Presenters will examine the latest research into such technology and how it can be used in commercial vehicles. The focus will be on devices to determine PERCLOS, a measure of eyelid droop. It has proven to be one of the most reliable gauges in measuring driver fatigue.
To register for the conference, call Annette Smith at 301-499-4936. Written proposals and demonstration ideas should be submitted by March 1 to Robert J. Carroll, Office of Motor Carrier Research and Standards (HCS-30), Federal Highway Administration, 400 7th St., SW, Washington, D.C. 20590. His telephone number is 202-366-9109.
