John Reinhart has begun as CEO of the Virginia Port Authority and will oversee a restructuring effort already under way, according to the port.

Reinhart, who was named to the post in October, comes from Maersk Line Ltd., where he was president. He also was the company’s CEO from 2000 to 2004. Maersk Line, headquartered in Norfolk, Va., provides transportation, ship management and maritime technical services to government and commercial customers.

Reinhart is responsible for operations of Virginia’s marine terminal facilities: APM Terminals Virginia, Newport News Marine Terminal, Norfolk International Terminals, Portsmouth Marine Terminal, Port of Richmond and the Virginia Inland Port.

“We have significant challenges to address to achieve the potential of the port and serve our customers, constituents and the commonwealth. Working closely with the administration, the VPA’s board and colleagues, we will chart the course to achieve the results to move the port forward and serve with integrity and purpose,” Reinhart said in a statement.

“John has challenges before him, and we’re confident he is the person to finish the job of bringing the Port of Virginia together,” VPA Chairman Jeffrey Wassmer said in a statement.
