Rep. Tom Petri (R-Wis.), who chairs a key House transportation subcommittee, announced April 11 that he will retire at the end of his current term.

Petri, who has served in the House since 1979, chairs the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee’s highways and transit subcommittee, and has been a key player in moving the next highway bill forward.

He played an integral role crafting the 2012 highway law MAP-21 law,  which expires in September, and this year has met with trucking groups and other stakeholders ahead of MAP-21’s reauthorization.

Seen by most political observers as a moderate, Petri, who has long been a key strategist on highway funding, said he will formally announce his plans at a town hall meeting in Neenah, Wis., on April 14.
