AS VEGAS — The American Transportation Research Institute, meeting here this week, discussed research on highway-construction-zone safety and said it would study driver hours-of-service rules.

ATRI Chairman James Chairman James Staley, president of the Roadway Group of Yellow Roadway Corp., said highway construction safety was a “critical issue.”

ATRI is affiliated with American Trucking Associations, which held its Management Conference and Exhibition here Oct. 3-7.

“The No. 1 priority for that group is . . . to make sure we look at higher-productivity vehicles and what the highway reauthorization bill might provide in terms of new highways. We think it is just a critical issue for the future of this industry,” Staley said.
