Freight delays at the Port of New York and New Jersey have caused “damaging consequences” to cargo flow at the East Coast’s largest port complex, a retailers group wrote in letter to the port.

“As the timing of the arrival of the post-Chinese New Year shipments approaches, retailers are concerned that further disruptions will take place resulting in lost sales, empty shelves and disappointed customers,” wrote Kelly Kolb, vice president of government affairs for the Retail Industry Leaders Association.

Kolb said the group realized the port has had “an unusual number of weather-related issues that have temporarily closed terminals and slowed operations,” but said “the backlog of cargo has become unreasonable and should be considered an extremely serious matter to all those involved.”

RILA also sent the letter to state and industry officials in both states.
