Roadrunner Buys Calif. Intermodal Firm

Roadrunner Transportation Systems said it has acquired The James Brooks Co., a provider of intermodal transportation and related services to the California ports of Oakland and Los Angeles/Long Beach.

The purchase price was about $7.5 million, Roadrunner said in a statement. James Brooks primarily transports fresh produce including citrus, vegetables, fruit and nuts.

The move “matches up well with our existing intermodal drayage business, which we believe will enhance our driver utilization and retention,” Roadrunner CEO Mark DiBlasi said in a statement.

James Brooks generated about $12 million last year, with operating margins in excess of 10%, Roadrunner Chief Financial Officer Peter Armbruster said.

Roadrunner Transportation Systems is ranked No. 38 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
