Roadway Earns Environment Award

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A team of employees from Roadway Express received the Environmental Excellence in Trucking award for reducing hazardous waste.

The award, sponsored by American Trucking Associations and Safety Kleen Corp., recognizes environmental programs developed by trucking company employees that go beyond government requirements.

Leona Bowser, Lori Leonti, Dennis McMickens, Terry Dagen, Doug Motter and Larry Aiello won for two programs they developed to cut hazardous waste production at Roadway, based in Akron, Ohio.

One nationwide effort involves donating slightly damaged freight that was refused by shippers or receivers to nonprofit groups. In a three-month period, the carrier gave charities 6,000 pounds of goods, such as paint and wood stain, that otherwise would have ended up as hazardous waste.

In addition, a Roadway facility in Carlisle, Pa., reduced the amount of hazardous waste it produced by 75%. It separated waste paint from nonhazardous debris such as empty containers and spill clean-up materials.

Four finalists for the award were also honored at the Sept. 8 ceremony:

  • An Allied Systems terminal in Norfolk, Va., that reduced the amount of oil, air and fuel filter waste by 80% and virtually eliminated waste oil production.
  • Federal Express of Memphis, Tenn., for developing an environmental policies and procedures manual electronically that saved 92,000 pounds of paper.
  • Knight Transportation of Phoenix for starting a company car-pooling program.
  • A Ruan Leasing Co.’s service leader in Savannah, Ga., that created a spill control device that prevents materials from leaking into the environment.
