Ryder Reaches Logistics Milestone

The head of Ryder System's logistics unit said the company is managing more than $1.5 billion in freight shipments annually for supply chain management clients.

Raymond B. Greer, president of Ryder Integrated Logistics, said this demonstrated the company's ability to provide clients with "the optimum transportation solution regardless of mode or individual carrier."

Ryder has contracts with more than 650 carriers, including air, rail, ocean and truck operators, to provide inbound and outbound transportation as well as product return services principally in North America.

Most industry analysts consider Ryder to be the largest provider of third-party logistics services.

Richard Armstrong, publisher of "Who's Who in Logistics," recently ranked Ryder as the largest of 40 third-party logistics providers in terms of net logistics revenue, which is gross revenue minus purchased transportation costs. Ryder was No. 1 with $1.2 billion, followed by Penske Logistics at $807 million and Schneider Dedicated at $740 million.

Greer said Ryder is the nation's largest dedicated contract carrier even though many supply chains do not lend themselves to dedicated, closed-loop transportation where vehicles leave and return to the same location.
