Ryder System Inc. said its fleet of 500 natural gas-powered trucks has driven more than 20 million miles since the company created the program in 2011.

The fleet consists of liquefied natural gas and compressed natural gas tractors serving about 40 customers in California, New York, Texas, Arizona, Michigan, Utah, Georgia, and Louisiana.

“As a provider of full-service lease, commercial rental and dedicated transportation services, our business model puts us in a unique position to enable more fleets to convert to natural gas and realize the benefits of this cost-effective, clean and domestic energy source,” Ryder Chairman and CEO Robert Sanchez said in a statement.

In 2013, the company opened its first natural-gas fueling stations, in California, for the public and customers in Orange and Fontana.

Ryder’s Supply Chain Solutions ranks No. 10 on the Transport Topics Top 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
