Grocery chain Safeway Inc. said its fleet of more than 1,000 trucks nationwide will run with a mix of biodiesel fuel, the Washington Post reported Friday.
The trucks will operate using a blend of traditional diesel and biodiesel, derived from vegetable oils or animal fat, the Post reported.
Safeway estimated the switch will help reduce its annual carbon dioxide emissions by 75 million pounds.
The company announced the switch on Capitol Hill in Washington Thursday with several members of Congress, along with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials.
Safeway, Pleasanton, Calif., estimated its Washington-area trucks consume about 975,000 gallons of fuel each year and said it expects to spend one to two cents more per gallon on biodiesel.
Safeway Inc. is ranked No. 19 on the Transport Topics Private 100 listing of private fleets.
