Saia Inc. reported Friday that its first-quarter net income rose to $3 million or 21 cents a share, from $2.4 million or 16 cents a year ago.

The parent company of less-than-truckload carrier Saia Motor Freight Line said its revenue gained 13% to $231.8 million.

Saia, which changed its name last year from SCS Transportation, said its operating income for the quarter was $7.1 million, including $2.4 million in integration expenses in its acquisition of the Connection Company and Madison Freight Systems.

Last year, the company completed the sale of its Jevic Transportation unit to an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners.
