The Surface Transportation Board is up to full strength after the Senate voted Feb. 24 to confirm the nominations of William Clyburn and Wayne Burkes.

Clyburn, who was appointed to an interim term on the board in December, will serve until Dec. 31, 2000. He replaces Commissioner Jake Simmons, who was not reappointed in 1996.

Burkes, a Mississippi Transportation Commissioner, will serve until Dec. 31, 2002.

“Burkes brings a real multimodal background to the STB. His experience, education and training extend beyond the world of transportation,” Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) said, citing Burkes’ background as an insurance underwriter and retired major general in the Mississippi Air National Guard.

Burkes replaces Commissioner Gus Owen, who did not seek reappointment to the board last year.
