Senate Panel to Examine Truck Safety March 14

Truck safety concerns will be the focus of a Senate subcommittee hearing March 14.

The Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety and Security Subcommittee hearing was scheduled after appropriators in the chamber recently explored funding options for infrastructure projects.

“America needs a new plan, and we need a new plan so we can successfully meet those shortfalls that we’re facing in funding but also so we can strengthen our transportation system,” Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), chairman of the subcommittee that oversees trucking regulations, said at the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials conference in Washington on March 2.

At the hearing, the subcommittee will hear from Christopher Hart, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board; Capt. Chris Turner of the Kansas Highway Patrol; Paul Jovanis, professor emeritus at Pennsylvania State University and chairman of a Transportation Research Board committee; Jerry Moyes, chairman emeritus at Swift Transportation Co.; and Adrian Lund, president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Swift Transportation ranks No. 6 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
