Shake-up at CSX Rail Lines

The chief executive officer of CSX Transportation and several of his top assistants were fired last week after a federal agency found problems with track safety at the largest railroad in the eastern United States.

Ronald J. Conway, president of the railroad; Gary Spiegel, operations vice president; and John Sammon, head of the merchandise business unit, were fired April 12 by John Snow, chairman of CSX Corp., the railroad’s parent company.

All three men were previously employed by Conrail, which was split up in a $10 billion deal between CSX and Norfolk Southern in June. Conway was chief of operations at Conrail.

CSXT has had trouble adjusting to the merger, leading to shipper complaints and declining stock prices.
